BP Gulf Coast Oil Spill
Guidepost Solutions was retained to conduct claim fraud investigations in the aftermath of the BP Gulf Coast oil spill. For two years, we directed investigations on nearly 18,000 compensation claims that spanned the entire Gulf Coast, including Texas. The investigations involved hundreds of local private investigators, each compliant with the laws of the state in which he or she operated.
Our team developed an investigation plan for each referral, supervised the local private investigators and prepared all closing reports, which were reported back to Gulf Coast Claims Facility for its use in resolving claims. The complexity of those investigations varied from individual claims involving only one or two issues to sophisticated schemes involving hundreds of claims alleging similar facts. The project team, which included more than 200 Guidepost Solutions’ field investigators, wrote thousands of fraud reports which were described by an official of the U.S. Department of Justice as the finest body of investigative work he had ever seen, without incident. Many of the reports of potentially fraudulent claims resulted in numerous prosecutions and convictions.
